As President & Partner of SWAT, I partnered with SH Hotels & Resorts during a pivotal growth phase for 1 Hotels, helping evolve the brand from an ethos-driven startup into a globally scalable luxury hospitality platform. The work extended far beyond marketing, connecting guest experience, brand positioning, digital infrastructure, operational systems, and storytelling into a more cohesive ecosystem designed to preserve the soul of the brand while supporting rapid expansion.

 

MAKING SUSTAINABLE LUXURY SCALABLE

As 1 Hotels prepared for rapid expansion, the challenge was never simply building awareness. The real challenge was preserving the soul of the brand while creating the systems required to scale it globally.

With multiple properties in development and sustainability positioned at the center of the experience, the company needed a more unified operating and storytelling framework capable of maintaining consistency without becoming formulaic.

Working closely with the executive team at SH Hotels & Resorts, I helped align brand strategy, guest experience, communications, and digital infrastructure into a more cohesive and scalable platform.

BUILDING A FLEXIBLE BRAND SYSTEM

The work extended across positioning, booking flow, guest touchpoints, visual identity, and operational marketing systems, all designed to reinforce a more emotionally resonant and strategically integrated hospitality experience.

Together with the SWAT creative team, we refined the brand voice and digital ecosystem while developing flexible storytelling frameworks capable of scaling across properties without losing local character.

That balance became critical.

Luxury hospitality cannot feel overly templated. Each property needed freedom to reflect its surroundings while still reinforcing the larger philosophy behind 1 Hotels.

EXTENDING THE EXPERIENCE

The work eventually expanded into food and beverage concepts including The Osprey, Habitat, and Brooklyn Heights Social Club, helping extend the brand beyond guestrooms into a broader lifestyle ecosystem rooted in natural luxury, restraint, and cultural relevance.

What ultimately made the brand powerful was the alignment between mission, design, operations, and guest experience.

NATURAL LUXURY, BUILT WITH INTENTION

What always impressed me most about 1 Hotels was how thoughtfully the brand philosophy translated into the actual physical experience of each property.

The vision for natural luxury was smart from the beginning, but what made the brand truly work was the discipline behind the design approach itself. Rather than forcing every hotel into a rigid template, the team utilized indigenous materials and drew inspiration directly from the environment and culture surrounding each property.

Although every 1 Hotel shares a similar emotional sensibility, none of them feel identical. The properties feel connected through philosophy rather than repetition.

That balance is incredibly difficult to achieve at scale, and it remains one of the smartest examples of hospitality brand strategy I have seen.
